Ardia 0.2.31: The last of CEF leaves the building.

Ardia now runs on plain Chromium 154.0.8037.97, which brings Chrome’s latest security fixes. The last pieces of CEF, the framework it was first built on, are gone. Nothing should look different.

Fixed

  • Videos go full screen without a black flash. Pressing f on YouTube, or any page’s full-screen button, showed a black window or the old layout stretched for a moment on the way in, and a black page for about half a second on the way out. Now the window grows showing the full-screen video and shrinks showing the page, as in Dia.
  • Closing the floating video from another app leaves you where you were. Clicking the picture-in-picture window’s close button, play, pause or the seek bar while you worked in another app brought Ardia’s window to the front. Now only Back to Tab does.
  • Pages without a background of their own look as they do in Chrome. Such pages showed the app’s own colour through them: on Google Workspace in dark mode, whole sections turned dark with dark text on top. They now get Chrome’s white canvas, or its dark one when the page asks for dark, as in Chrome and Dia.
  • The sidebar looks like itself after you show it again. If you had peeked at a hidden sidebar from the window’s edge, showing it again kept the peek panel’s tint and shadow until you switched apps.
  • Pinned tabs show their own hover card. With more than one profile, hovering a pinned tab could show the card of the other profile’s pinned tab in the same spot: Gmail’s card over X, say.
  • Backspace in the command bar gives you a fresh search. Typing “git” completes to github.com; deleting the completion now drops it, so Enter searches for “git”, as in Chrome and Dia. Before, the completion disappeared but Enter still opened GitHub.
  • The command bar knows a URL when it sees one. localhost:3000, myserver:8080, münchen.de and docs.new open as sites; 10:30, index.html and node.js search. “git” followed by a space no longer completes to github.com, and a site that’s only a bookmark or an open tab no longer completes as you type.
  • Clearing history from chrome://settings no longer quits the app. Settings › Privacy › Delete browsing data, with history ticked, closed Ardia instead of clearing it.

  • In the command bar, ↑ and ↓ wrap around the list, and ⇧⌦ removes the selected history row.
  • In the command bar, a space right after a site’s address or a search keyword (youtube.com, then space) searches that site, as Tab does, and the completion behaves as in Chrome after →, ⌘A, ⌘L and paste.
  • Chrome’s own Close Tab command on a pinned tab closes it instead of quitting the app.

Now on 0.2.40

It kept going.

Ardia is a free Mac browser with Arc’s sidebar and Dia’s polish, on real Chromium. See how fast, or click around the demo first.
