This release is about speed. The numbers come from our benchmarks on an Apple Silicon Mac, before and after each change.
Fixed
- Ardia uses less battery while it waits. Idle with one tab, it now uses 0.42% CPU instead of 1.03% and wakes the processor 17 times a second instead of 44. With 20 tabs open, 1.24% instead of 2.14%.
- Opening tabs quickly no longer bounces between them. When the app was busy, Ardia and the engine could trade tab switches back and forth while new tabs opened, and the window flickered between them. In our test, 12 tabs opened in a row caused up to 75 switches; now each tab switches once.
- The Bookmarks menu keeps up with big libraries. Every page load and tab switch rebuilt the whole menu, which took 21.4 ms each time with 5,000 bookmarks. It now changes only what changed, in 1.0 ms. Address bar suggestions also stay within their time slices with tens of thousands of bookmarks.
- Big sessions stay quick. With 1,000 tabs, tabs on top spent 5.8 ms on every change working out groups and splits; now 0.18 ms. Collapsed groups no longer build rows you can’t see, and a long sidebar fills in a few rows per frame instead of all at once.
- Saving never holds up the app, and a failed save isn’t lost. Your session and history are written in the background. A save that fails, on a full disk say, is kept and retried until it lands, and sync waits for its record to reach the disk before it shares your changes.
- Forms opened in a split keep what you entered. A form sent into split view with ⌥⇧-click or ⌥⌘-click arrives with its data instead of loading the page without it. A tab waiting in the background no longer resends an old form after you’ve taken it somewhere else.
- New profiles no longer add a “Chromium Apps” folder. Creating a profile could make a Chromium Apps folder in the Applications folder in your home folder.
Smaller
- Recording a site’s icon takes 0.3 ms instead of 13 ms with 50,000 icons saved, and the icon list no longer grows without limit.
- The ad blocker’s files are checked in the background at launch, so the first page paints a little sooner.
